Leadership

The team building the road.

Space Mobility is a founder-led company and built on deep specialization. The team shares a passion for innovation and a discipline in how regolith behaves, how it becomes material, and how that material is shaped so it holds up under the demands of sustained lunar operations. One common goal unifies its leadership, building a permanent human presence on the Moon.

Thomas Shaffer

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Thomas Shaffer

Thomas founded Space Mobility to build the infrastructure the lunar surface economy will run on, starting with the road. He has founded and scaled companies in solar, telecommunications, enterprise security, healthcare and education, with three successful exits.

At Space Mobility he leads the engineering direction, the intellectual property program, and the company’s work with agencies, rover makers and lander providers. He writes about lunar surface infrastructure on X as @RoadsontheMoon.

Kevin Cannon

Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Kevin Cannon

Joins Space Mobility November 1, 2026

Kevin holds a PhD in Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences from Brown University, where his postdoctoral research covered lunar ice deposits, resource modeling and mapping, and regolith.

He is a tenure-track professor at the Colorado School of Mines, jointly appointed to the Space Resources Program and the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering, teaching Planetary Geology, Regolith Properties and Processing, and Mineralogy. In industry he has served as Chief Technology Officer and Founding Member of Technical Staff at Y Combinator backed space startups.

His work spans space resource prospecting and development, laboratory synthesis and analysis of planetary materials, and remote sensing.

Deven O’Rourke

Space Resources Engineering Lead

Deven O’Rourke

Deven holds a Master of Science in Space Resources from the Colorado School of Mines. His graduate work there was part of NASA’s Moon to Mars X-Hab Academic Innovation Challenge, on a lunar habitat designed to be outfitted from material found on the surface, including the extraction of usable material from regolith by melting.

He began his career at Abengoa Solar building parabolic trough concentrators, where he is the first named inventor on a patent for the trough heat transfer system and worked on United States Department of Energy programs.

At Space Mobility he leads the space resources engineering: the material, the process, and the geometry that has to survive both.

Advisory Board

Coming soon.

Space Mobility is building an advisory board in space law, policy and lunar surface operations. Members will be listed here as agreements are signed.
